Overcoming Depression Without Medication – Keynote Speaker(NNOS Studios of Ohio)

There are some things we would just rather not talk about. We don’t want others to see that battle that’s going on inside.
You know that pain and sadness that you have when you don’t really feel loved, understood, or valued?

Do you know how there are times when you feel like you have no goal or purpose here?

Or how you’d just rather stay in bed than get up because there is nothing that excites you about the day?

I know for me there was nothing that enticed me…I didn’t care about anything.

But something along the road let me catch a glimpse of hope and I slowly began to care. This caused me to start looking into depression. I wanted to figure out exactly what was going on in my brain and body. What I found was fascinating.

I learned that if you trace back any one of our fears or limitations, they all branch from two main fears:
1.)the fear of not being loved
2.)the fear of not being good enough
These branches are answers to questions we indirectly ask ourselves like, “Why am I not being loved” and then “how do I know im not loved?” Well whenever we ask ourselves a question, whether directly or indirectly, our brain comes up with an answer.

The answers are often based on something from our past, but they do not have to be. Most of the time, they are not the correct answers. For example, if you ask yourself, “Why can’t I lose weight?” You may get an answer like, “Because you’re a pig.” And you’ll stop thinking. Now the answer is totally incorrect, but your brain has to come up with answers to your questions.
Another example:
“How do I know i’m not being loved?” You may get an answer like, “Because my wife/husband isn’t doing (whatever).”

The problem is that these answers, these branches, become our beliefs and we focus on the last level of branches. By focusing on the answer our brain came up with, we are successfully kept from seeing the real issue.

But this is just the beginning. Beliefs set off a whole slew of other events within our brain. As a result, we become chemically inbalanced, and often resort to medication. There are mechanisms in our brain that are responsible for maintaining our current set of beliefs. The mechanisms are not negative, they only work with the material we feed them. If the beliefs we create and hold are negative, our results will be negative also.

Our objective is to cause these mechanisms to work in our favor.

One of these mechanisms is the Reticular Activating System. It is like a search engine for data that is relevant to our beliefs. It’s what allows us to suddenly start noticing all the cars like the one we just bought. The cars were always there and our eyes always saw them, but it wasn’t part of our searching system, so it was spit out as irrelevant instead of being sent to our conscious mind for recognition. It works the same way with depression and any other case. Our brain only let’s us see what it is programmed to look for.

The next part we need to reset is the Psycho-Cybernetic Mechanism(PCM). It is a safetly mechanism that keeps us in our programmed comfort zones. This can be an abusive relationship. It might be sickness or depression. Remember, the brain works with the material it is fed…it’s not biased to our wants or don’t wants. When we step out of this pattern we’re used to, this comfort zone, the PCM sends a chemical into our body that causes doubt, fear, and wow…anxiety.

Trying to control our fears and anxieties is futile. Resetting the comfort zone, is the solution.

To your success,

Feeling depressed? Here’s an easy way to get rid of depression without anti-depressants.

By Dennis Fisher

Depression is a mental condition that is becoming increasingly common. More and more people suffer today from depressed feelings of despondency, apathy and disinterest. Symptoms of depression often include a mood of hopelessness. Everything seems futile. Nothing seems worthwhile.

It’s a mental state that affects people of all ages – from young students to the elderly – in every walk of life.

Many people, who feel constantly depressed, use anti-depressant drugs to help them get rid of depression.

One of the most popular anti-depressants prescribed by doctors is the Fluoxetine drug known as Prozac. Prozac has proved helpful in treating symptoms of depression. But, like all drugs, there is always the danger of side effects.

Side effects reported include nausea, digestive problems, insomnia and extreme fatigue. In a number of cases there have been reports of undesirable sexual side effects.

If you are one of the many unfortunate individuals, who suffers from depression and you don’t want to use anti-depressants because of the danger of side-effects, you’ll be pleased to know there is another way to get rid of depression – a very easy way.

It doesn’t require the use of any type of medication whatsoever.

No doubt you’ve heard the following expression many times:
“You’ve got to have a reason to get up in the morning”.

Why are some people able to wake up in the morning bright and cheerful, ready to start the day with optimism and enthusiasm while others find this so difficult to do?

Why are some people, who suffer from painful physical ailments, able to ignore their discomfort and focus their minds on what has to be done during the day?

Because people who start each day with a positive attitude of mind have something to look forward to!

If you want to get rid of your feelings of depression and wake up in the morning feeling bright, cheerful and optimistic, there is an easy way this can be done.

Give yourself something to look forward to each day.

A goal is an objective. It doesn’t have to be a grand, impressive, ambitious objective. It can be a minor goal. A project is a minor goal.

It may be a goal that some may consider insignificant and unimportant, but minor goals can motivate and energize you just as effectively as any grand, ambitious scheme that could change the world!

Your minor goal will encourage you to wake up in the morning, bright, cheerful, and enthusiastic and optimistic because you have something to look forward to.

Give yourself a project and you’ll have a minor goal!

Question by G Marcotte: Where in North York can a person go for psychiatric help and medication for depression? I want to kill myself.?
My earliest memories are of my father beating my mother almost daily. One memory was my father slapping my mother across the face asking about spent money. Another time he put a crossbow to her throat, and punched her in the mouth knocking a tooth out. He would also beat on, and raped, one of my sisters. My brother threatened to take his own life, my father handed him a knife, then my brother slit his wrist in front of him. Moving on, my early school years were met with nonstop teasing and bullying. I was an easy target for everyone, since I was already emotionally destroyed from what I witnessed at home. Moving on to high school. The bullying turned more violent. I was followed home from school and beaten often. I was teased in class. People would even poke me in the back of the head on the bus for their own amusement. I was later forced to leave school because it became too much to deal with. Moving on, I’m 26 now. Since high school, I’ve spent time doing nothing. I can’t work because of peer issues and depression. I’ve been hospitalized for suicide attempts. I’ve been single for years because I lack any kind of self confidence or self esteem, and I don’t think I’m worth anyone’s love. How could anyone love me when I hate myself? I have friends, but I don’t see them much. I’m unable to make new friends because of Major depressive disorder and avoidant personality disorder. I WANT to work, but I fear losing my job, being unable to find another, and ending up on the streets. I want to go back to school, but the thought of it gives me a kind of panic attack. Getting robbed on the street last month didn’t help any. Right now I’m sitting here at this computer wondering why I shouldn’t just jump off my balcony right now. I don’t want to live any more. I feel like I can’t be happy. I feel alone, helpless, pathetic. I don’t know if any one can help me and I don’t know where to begin looking.

Where in North York can a person go for psychiatric help and medication for depression?

Best answer:

Answer by ~Xx:Snails:xX~
It sounds like you have a lot going on. There are some really good sites out there that help you locate a therapist. You can just go to any random therapist and want to make sure who you go to has what you need. do you want a woman or a man? do you want medication or natural therapy? are you willing to travel? how much can you afford? do they do pro bono work? these are all good questions to be asking even though I know you need help right now— youre going to have to doctor shop a little. Heres some sites for you to try that may help you out. I’m not from your area but a lot of psychologists and psychiatrists will advertise online.

http://www.mytherapistmatch.com/

http://www.therapistlocator.net/

http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/

http://www.find-a-therapist.com/

Try the first and then the last two. you can fill out a questionaire, search online, look around your zip code, search your state. etc. If none of these work, try googling “find a psychologist/psychiatrist in my area” and then click a few sites and they will have options to help you search for someone in your area. I had a friend who did this and actually found a good therapist to work with. Hope I helped some!

Learn How To Treat Depression Without Medication

If you’re experiencing mild or low level depression symptoms, all natural depression medication may be a good alternative treatment for you. Because many different things can cause symptoms of depression, if you receive a diagnosis or suspect you may have a depressive disorder, a physical evaluation may be necessary. Depression may be caused partly by physical illnesses like viral infections, medication side effects, etc., and the cause of the actual emotions of depression may be a mixture of physical and psychological issues. For mild depression, self-evaluation may be enough. More serious, life disrupting symptoms (clinical depression) needs to be treated with the help of a professional. No matter how mild or serious you deem your depression to be, you need to learn how to treat depression without medication before your symptoms get worse.

Natural remedies and herbs for how to treat depression without medication. Many have found that dietary supplements and herbal remedies can be effective in easing symptoms of mild depression, especially when combined with some of the tactics already mentioned.

SAM-e

If you want to find something from the health food store to fight depression, you could ask for SAM-e, also known as s-adenosyl-methionine.

SAM-e is a substance which our body can make using the amino acid L-methionine, and various other nutrients. It is believed that SAM-e can boost the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine in the brain, which may be able to improve mood.

Research reports from Europe say SAM-e has the same rate of effectiveness as most prescription anti-depressants, about 70 percent, but that it works faster and has fewer side effects. Some studies have found positive improvements in depressed patients in as few as four days.

SAM-e is better absorbed if you take it on an empty stomach between meals. A suggested dose is 400 milligrams per day.

People who have bipolar depression should not take SAM-e. If you are already taking MAO inhibitor antidepressants, do not take SAM-e. SAM-e is not legally available in all countries.

Amino Acid Therapy for how to treat depression without medication. Not all psychiatrists prescribe pharmaceutical antidepressants. Some psychiatrists prefer to treat depression with natural supplements such as vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acids.

The amino acids which have been found most effective in treating depression are L-tyrosine, L-tryptophan and L-phenylalanine.

For many decades, the amino acid L-tryptophan was widely used to successfully treat depression. However, in 1989 a contaminated batch of this substance resulted in several deaths, so L-trypophan was removed from the market. Even though the manufacturing process for L-tryptophan has been changed to prevent this problem, the ban on the sale of L-tryptophan in many countries persists.

Today, a product related to L-Tryptophan, called 5-HTP is available in many health food stores. The 5-HTP is believed to have none of the problems that caused L-Tryptophan to be withdrawn from the shelves, and it appears to be effective in lifting depression.

If you decide to use 5-HTP for depression, discuss it with your doctor. People who are taking MAO inhibitor drugs for depression should not be taking amino acid supplements. Very young and very old people should avoid amino acid supplementation.

Some other supplements that are often recommended for depression are Omega-3 and D-Phenylalanine. Omega-3 supplementation has been found to be beneficial for certain types of depression. Omega-3 oils like flax, borage and fish oil are healthy fats that research has shown are necessary for replenishing brain cells and neurons. These are the healthy fats that are often missing in the typical low fat, high carb diet.

These are a few ideas for self-management of low level depression. Everyone is different and the only way to know what will work for you is to try them. They are safe and usually without significant side effects.

Depression Medication, Help for Hopelessness and Unhappiness

Many people who experience depression take medication to help them feel better and overcome their depression. Medication can be very helpful to such individuals, helping them to rid themselves of the feelings of hopelessness and unhappiness. Studies have found, furthermore, that medication is even more effective when partnered with a supportive environment and good therapy. The two together can help restore feelings of well-being, and help overcome depression.

There are many ways to go about getting medication for depression. However, it usually requires a trip to a doctor and a referral to a psychiatrist or psychologist. Only someone who is specifically trained to diagnose mental conditions states should prescribe depression medication. Periodic visits to someone who can listen can also be helpful in dispelling depression. This is also where having a good support system comes in. Friends and family can be very helpful, if they are supportive. Such support is more effective than medication alone.

Unfortunately, there is another form of medication for depression. By using alcohol and illegal drugs, many people “self medicate” themselves for depression. Many of them do not even realize that they are depressed. All they know is that they feel bad, and the only way to feel better is to get drunk or engage in illicit activities. Self medication is quite common because many people just assume that life is bad, and the weekends were made for getting smashed or high. They feel good while on the alcohol or drugs, so they think that nothing is wrong, other than life in general.

Additionally, self medication allows depressed people to relieve their depressed feelings without the stigma of visiting a “head shrink.” For many people, going to someone who is supposed to treat mental conditions would be admitting that there is something wrong with the mind. That is a hard thing to overcome, especially since few people want to advertise that they have mental problems. So it is understandable that they would prefer to just feel better in their own way.

The problem with self medication, though, is that it does nothing to break the cycle of depression. In fact, it only adds to the depression. Once the effects of the alcohol or drugs wear off, the person often “crashes,” feeling worse than before. The person feels worse, and the only way to feel better is to get drunk or high again. And the cycle perpetuates itself. Sometimes it becomes bad enough that the behavior is not just a weekend occurrence, but expands to disrupt work and family life during the week.

Medication, when administered by a professional, can be a helpful tool in overcoming depression. Self medication through alcohol and illegal drugs, however, is destructive and rarely does it help someone overcome depression. And it adds the problems associated with addiction on top of the problems of depression. Feelings of depression should be explored by people qualified to help you overcome your depression. This way, proper help and appropriate medication can be found to aid you as you move out of depression.

Question by shoptyd_2000: How do you get depression medication when you’re broke?
I have not been diagnosed with depression. But I have been asking to go to the doctor for several years now to be checked for depression and my mom refused to take me or pay for any of this. (I basically know that I am, I guess I just need a professional’s assurance.) Now I’m 18 and have NO extra money whatsoever to go see a doctor, let alone pay for medication if diagnosed. I don’t know anything about insurance. Help!
