Ian J Spencer asked:

Depression is an issue that affects millions of individuals around the world. This is a common occurrence that may result due to a number of reasons throughout an individual’s life. While depression may be mild, in many instances, it can be quite severe. It results when an individual not only feels “sad”, but also feels a sense of hopelessness and helplessness that can last for a short time, or continue for years.

In some cases, this mental condition can actually impair an individual’s overall ability to function in their day to day lives, and can result in that individual feeling as if taking their life is the only way to escape the emotions of despair that are experienced. There are several signs of depression to look out for. Here, I will share them with you.

Depression Signs to Watch For

It is essential that you learn to carefully monitor the signs of depression. Many serious situations are likely to occur if an individual suffers from severe depression and experiences symptoms that should have been recognized as potentially dangerous.

These situations may include an individual becoming homicidal and/or suicidal, indulging in drug abuse, resorting to alcohol abuse, and even the development of other types of mental illnesses developing. While it is true that the potentially dangerous signs of depression will vary by individual, the following represents some common signs to look for:

1.	One of the first symptoms that something is seriously wrong is when a person suffers from depression and often feels as if they have nothing to live for. They may feel as if everything is hopeless. Individuals who fall into these emotions often may experience thoughts of *******. In other cases, many do not place priority on the fact that there are consequences to their actions. This is when many will turn to pills, drugs, alcohol, and other types of behaviors that are considered to be dangerous.

2.	The next symptom that is potentially dangerous when it comes to signs of depression to watch for includes behavior that is aggressive. This aggression may be towards others, animals, or even themselves. However, if this sign does become evident, it is absolutely necessary to ensure that help is sought. In many cases, the individual that is depressed simply does not recognize this sign in themselves because of the wide range of emotions that are experienced.

3.	If you start to notice that an individual seems apathetic and does not care about the health of their body and similar issues, it may be time to recognize the depression as serious. These individuals may abuse drugs and alcohol, and may even indulge in serious problems like self mutilation and similar behaviors. If these signs are evident, it is time for help.

Overcoming Depression

There are many effective means of managing and overcoming depression. One of the most important things that anyone can do when it comes to this mood disorder is to develop a support system. It is important to have one or more people to talk to when you need it. In addition to this, there are medications that can help moderate chemicals such as serotonin in the body that are responsible for depression. It is also possible to receive counseling and behavior modification assistance. If you have depression, be sure to discuss your treatment options with your doctor.

James Kronefield asked:

Depression is a big concern for millions of people. They don’t just suffer from the normal depression that you get when something out of the ordinary happens; it is much more than that. Many people stay depressed everyday of their life. Most of the time they don’t even know why they feel so bad and many have given up on ever feeling good again. However, it does not have to stay this way. Use the ideas on how to stop depression symptoms that are listed below to help you overcome these symptoms. It will help you to feel good again and enjoy life.

Begin by admitting that you are suffering from a problem with depression. This will make a big difference in the success that you will have eliminating depression from your life. People who don’t want to admit they are depressed will just continue to get worse as time goes on. You can’t solve a problem that you refuse to accept. After acceptance, you will need to start figuring out what is causing the problem. Depression can be caused by many different reasons so this may take some time, but the sooner you start thinking about it and looking for the problems the sooner you can begin to move on.

Many people become depressed because they have such a low self-esteem. They feel like everything they do is wrong and they have just given up on life. Still others become bored with the same old routine everyday. One way to overcome depression is by finding ways to change these feelings. You can start by spending time with friends. Plan a lunch date once a month or go see a movie. Find ways to make your life more interesting, find a hobby or start playing a sport. Do things that can help to improve your self-confidence, this will help put you on your way to freeing your life from depression.

Always avoid too much alcohol and other types of depressants that can make you feel worse that you already do. Never feel ashamed for being depressed. Even some medications can make your symptoms worse so if you take medications do a little research to find out if what you take could be a problem. Everyone needs help from time to time and there is nothing wrong with asking for it. Family and friends can be a big help. If your depression is serious enough then you may need to take medication such as antidepressants to help you control your symptoms. Depression is a disease and you do need to treat it as such.

Joshua Miller asked:

Depression can simply be a reaction to monotony or a lack of control. Financial problems can also lead to depression, and so can moving or a loved one’s death. However, some people have genetic predispositions for depression. Chemical imbalances in the brain can lead to chronic depressed moods of varying degrees. Some hormonal changes can trigger depression, while other individuals’ depressive moods can be caused by seasonal cycles. It has been found that some physical illnesses can also lead to feelings of depression.

There are several mood disorders that include general depression. Manic depression, or bipolar disorder, is signified by periods of extreme highs followed by periods of extreme lows. Clinical depression is defined as a long-term depression episode, and seasonal affective disorder is a depressive disorder that relates to the seasons in a cyclical mode.

Many individuals seek treatment for depression every year, and those numbers are growing quickly. As less and less of a stigma is attached to being depressed, more and more individuals are claiming to be suffering from depression symptoms. There are a variety of designer drugs available these days to help treat clinical and manic depression. Often times, medical doctors will prescribed these drugs to patients who claim to be suffering from depression without actually performing psychiatric evaluations.

If you think you are suffering from a depression disorder, you should first consult a psychologist to see if you are actually clinically depressed. If the psychologist diagnoses you, he or she may prescribe therapy as treatment, or he or she might also refer you to a psychiatrist to obtain prescription drugs to help with chemical imbalances. Most psychologists find it most beneficial if patients combine their medications with therapy sessions to help them realize the roots of their episodes of depression.
