What is the best way to overcome depression?

unknown qυеѕtіοnеd:

Myself аnd mу family аrе distraught, having јυѕt found out thаt a very close relative іѕ suffering frοm depression.

It seems tο bе quite tеrrіblе, аѕ thеу hаνе contemplated ******* etc.

Wе аrе ѕο apprehensive. Thеу hаνе bееn οn anti-depressants fοr two days now, bυt thеу dο nοt come іntο effect fοr аt lеаѕt 2-4 weeks.

Being a psychology student, I know thаt anti-depressants dο nοt ‘rub out’ depression alone. Counselling іѕ required bυt thеу seem loath tο gο аnd speak tο a psychiatrist, thеу аrе shy, ashamed аnd embarrassed οf thеіr illness.

Dοеѕ counselling combined wіth medication really work? Wіll thеу еνеr gеt over thеіr depression аnd hοw long wіll іt take?

Wе јυѕt want thіѕ nightmare tο bе over.

As a doc I know meds take you to a top, and from there it is up to you.
Sadly no one knows what to do at that top.
I’m attaching the standard answer I give public here for depression(don’t read it as oriented at you)

    Meditation technique

Most of our problems stem from the mind.
Situations are what they are, but our mind puts a whole new spin on it, often for the worse.
This leads to a lot of the pain we feel, and being consumed by the pain we act from it, hurting those we care about.
This is right for all public in all positions of life, except babies.

So rather than be controlled by the mind, we should learn to control it.
It is hard to directly do so rather we can control its most obvious manifestation, the breath.
You’ll note that when you are very concentrated you won’t breath as much, or when mad shallow and rapidly.
    How to control the breath.
Inhale and as you do pay attention to the column of air entering your right nostril(air enters both sides, but focus on the right side for now).
Exhale and feel the column exit on the left side(air exits both sides, but pay attention to the left).
Inhale through the left nostril, exhale through the right(same as previous steps).
Inhale and feel the air in both nostrils rise to the top of your nose like an inverted ‘V’, then force it all out in one breath.
    This counts as one cycle.
You can go up to 100 in a day, and make a game of this.
If you lose track of the count restart.
As you get better you’ll notice your breathing slowing down.
Once you slow down sufficient, the mind slows down, to the top you can feel a space between thoughts.
As you advance further you’ll learn to identify yourself with that peace, not your painful past nor the vices you had.

    Excellent luck.

the best business for beiating depression is to be busy
the family has to make the persons life busy. The orst business is to be left mooping around the house all day.

As Sancre said med help then its up to you
I have lived with severe clinical depresson for over 20 yrs, Life is pretty excellent now.
In the early days the Meds helped get me back on a level playing field and and allowed me to make informed decisions.
Sometimes the black tide comes back but I recognise the signs and get to my Doctor and psyche as required as I am not going back there!!
In my opinion the best business you can do is support your relative on their way back and gently promote them to counselling
You call it a nightmare, imagine what is is like for them, I have been there and it is truely a horifying nightmare
Yes counselling/meds does work. Will they get over depression, Probablly not BUT What they will do with your loving support, is to learn to live with and control it

Check my profile, I have done all this while living with depression. I am not proud of my depression BUT neither am I ashamed of IT
Untill you have walked a mile in their shoes no one has a right ti critisize
I was lucky as I have a loving wife and children and they are the main reason I am writing this today
Never give up on them, NEVER

I myself am depressed and i wish i had someone who noticed and cared. All i want is a hug and being poised that everything is OK. Also motivation to get my life on a roll would be nice. Don’t give this depressive a choice make them get up and tender they will thank you later.

Online counseling is an alternative. Check out & onestepatatime.com & Some previous posts: See the advice, and weblinks/hotlines regarding suicidal thoughts/ideation, in section 5, at and contact them, when the need arises. ~~~ There is a quiz about depression, through sections 1, and 2, at ezy build, not more than: print the result, and take along to your primary mental health care provider. With depression, there is a choice of possible treatment types which needs to be made, and you can choose to use either allopathy, (modern Western medicine) with its reliance on antidepressants and therapy, or alternative treatments, which I advise trying first. This is since antidepressants are known to increase the rates of suicide, homicide, and aberrent behavio(u)r, particularly with young public, and often have unwanted side effects, such as sexual dysfunction, and/or variations in consequence.

Tests have shown that apart from clinical (major) depression, their results were not significantly superior to those taking a placebo (inert, or “sugar pill”). Antidepressants retain a degree of long term effectiveness for only around 30% of public. There is a saying in the mental health field: “If the only tool you have in your kit is a hammer, you tend to treat everything as a nail”. So it goes with doctors, and their prescription pads: handy, quick, and convenient, when trying to manage their large list of patients, and often allocating only several minutes to each.

Most of them are only trained to provide antidepressants and referrals for therapy, with those whose depression is resistant to those treatments being advised to have ElectroConvulsive Therapy, (ECT) with its risk of permanent, partial memory loss. Therapy, while often effective at first, becomes “same ancient, same ancient” after a while, for many public.

I suggest: (1.) Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it. (2.) Work up slowly to 30 – 60 minutes of exercise, daily. (3.) Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows small time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain). (4.) Use daily, one of the repose methods in sections 2, 2.c, 2.i, or 11, and/or yoga, Tai Chi, and/or the EFT, in sections 2.q, 2.o, and section 53, at whichever works best for you. (5.) Initially, at least, some form of counselling, preferably either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Touchy Behavio(u)ral Therapy. (6.) As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St. John’s wort, or supplements, such as SAMe, taken with a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55).

Start a mood chart/thought record, and record all negative thoughts. When you notice a negative thought, record the mood (disappointment, sadness, frustration, hopelessness, rage, etc.) and rate it, from 1; the lowest, to 100; the strongest you have ever felt. Have 3 columns, and in one, write down the thought. For example: Mood: Lonely: 90/100. Thought: “I feel like I will be alone for the rest of my life”. Then, even if this can be painful, it is very vital; record every piece of evidence in support of this: “I am alone right now. I have been for some time. There is nothing to prove this won’t continue”. In the last column, write down all the evidence refuting this: “I used to be honestly sociable, and loved being with friends. Change is inevitable in life, and unknown can state the way things will be in the future, for sure”. “Most public recover from depression, in time, and I seldom felt lonely, until becoming depressed”. Then read again what you have written. Give it a moment, to let it sink in, and rate that mood again, possibly putting it in brackets, and/or in a different color, but try to stick to a standard practice, for greater ease of review, later. Example: Mood: Lonely: [70/100].

If the amount of daylight you have been exposed to recently has reduced, perhaps due to the change of seasons, see Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) in section 2, at and, instead of taking around 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily; replace 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements for the winter months only! (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a small butter, to ensure it is utilised; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong go). Optimal levels are 50 – 55 ng/ml (115 – 125 nmol / L). It should be higher than 32 ng/ml.

Don’t use medications and supplements collectively, without medical advice, except for Omega 3, which is safe, anytime. Take sufficient supplements to attain, or exceed the levels (no possibility of overdose) of those every day, with an orange, or the juice of a freshly squeezed orange, grapefruit, or other antioxidant.
(make sure the epa is higher then the dha) vital for adults… kids need the opposite levels: more dha than epa, but all are beneficial, if you can’t achieve the recommended proportions.

Deliberate having your doctor test your vitamin D levels, (60% of depressed public have low vitamin D levels, and 80% of public in the Western world have low magnesium levels, and these are known to cause depression & anxiety. Also, replace your fixed salt with iodised salt.) using the 25 Hydroxyvitamin D test. Those public who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won’t need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many public, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this hard to achieve.

If the higher than is insufficient for you, after several months, (unlikely) try one of the alternatives, such as the neurofeedback, magnetic, or low current electrical stimulation, or EMDR therapy, (see section 33, at ezy build) keeping ECT back, as a last resort. Read: “Lift your mood now.” by John D Preston, Psy.D. 2001, New Harbinger Publications, Inc., 5674 Shattuck Avenue, Oakland. CA 94609 may be worth trying for this. I have read many books on depression, but if there is a better, more easily read, and one which is simpler to implement quickly, I haven’t yet found it.

Counseling, exercise, going to church, get out in the community. Not staying home all the time. No those meds don’t work I’ve taken them. They cause you to gain consequence. Psychologists don’t care is what I’ve found out. Neither do social workers, psychiatrists, etc. They are insensitive.
