A lot depends on what is causing the depression. If it is caused by an event (ie- death of a loved one) then it may not require antidepressants. However... if it is caused by a chemical imbalance, then yes antidepressants are necessary.

The way to find out for certain is to see a psychiatrist, they can diagnose the cause of the depression and work out a recovery plan. If the depression is caused by events, then it very well may not require medication.

Best of luck to you :-)

Yes, depression can definitely be treated without medication. The idea of chemicals in the brain causing depression is true to some degree, but it's as if the people believing this wholeheartedly have given up and there's nothing they can do without medication. Anti-depressants are really just a short-term solution to a potentially lifelong problem.

Losing control is one aspect that may cause people to become depressed. They ask themselves, "If I don't have any control over it, what's the point in trying?" In this case, you'll have to reappraise the situation into thinking that you are in control of your environment. This type of thinking will relieve some of the restriction you may feel when you think you can't complete tasks such as getting a job, doing your homework, etc.

Of course, this doesn't apply to everybody who has depression. There are varying degrees. But in some cases, medication has little to no effect either.

While reading your question, I didn't get the inkling that you were on the negative end of the spectrum. So I think you're on the right path to treating your own depression without medication.

Good luck.

There are several different types of depression.

I think the best way to manage depression is a holistic approach; it is a physical, emotional and spiritual problem, so we need to treat all three areas to get optimal results.

I don't believe people should take antidepressants or expect to find relief from them unless they have major depression and have spent time in bed because of it.

If there is no chemical imbalance in the brain, an antidepressant certainly can't "correct" it - it can make things worse. It would be like giving insulin to a patient that isn't diabetic; bad results.

If you've ever experienced the fullness of major depression you would know that we get to a place where we can't out think it. Positive thoughts are as unaccessable as the moon.

Well, for me, I need medication. I cannot easily control my thoughts to suddenly become happy because it's not as easy as some make it out to be.

Anti-Depressants do not cure the mental disease, they just make it more bearable to live with.

It depends on the degree of your depression...I tried to beat it without medication for 2 months but nothing worked. I started taking medication 2 weeks ago and already feel a little bit better. Don't listen to all of the media BS about ******* and terrible side effects, thats what stopped me from going on antidepressants and I wished that I did sooner.
