Richard Stooker asked:

When I was in my early 20s, I looked back and thought about how lucky I was because I’d been just the right age to see many important cultural changes.

I was just the right age to read comics a year after Stan Lee re-created Marvel Comics, inventing such still-popular characters as The Fantastic Four, Spiderman, The Hulk and The X-Men.

I was just the right age a little later to appreciate when Ballantine and Ace reprinted Edgar Rice Burroughs (author of the Tarzan books and even more exciting fantastic adventure stories).

I was a little too young to be listening to the radio when The Beatles first sang on The Ed Sullivan Show, but I began by late 1964, and so grew up with the best AM radio music in history, followed by FM, followed by the more sophisticated rock sound of the 1970s.

A few years later I was just the right age to appreciate when Lancer reprinted the Conan stories and other works by Robert E. Howard.

I was a tad young when I heard about The Lord of the Rings after it first became a fad on college, but I was in high school when Ballantine published it in paperback and I re-read it.

And through my high school years I took for granted reading the two best book series of all time — the Ace Books Science Fiction Specials edited by Terry Carr and Ballantine Books Adult Fantasy ostensibly edited by Lin Carter.

Yet, looking back, I didn’t connect this remarkable luck with how my elementary school teachers complained about our large class sizes (usually around 30 kids) or with how it just seemed natural that my high school class was the largest in the school’s history, but next year my sister’s class was even larger.

What’s all that have to do with a book about the coming depression?

Simple. I’m a baby boomer. The country’s entertainment industries didn’t give me just what I wanted at the age I needed it either by coincidence or because they loved me personally. It was because they knew there was a huge market of boys and girls the same age as I.

And now we’re starting to reach retirement age.

We’ll be vacating many jobs. We’ll stop buying stocks and bonds out of our paychecks. We’ll stop paying Social Security taxes out of our paychecks. We’ll start paying down debt instead of spending money on our latest toys. We’ll start selling off stocks and bonds to finance our cruises, golf games and heart surgeries.

According to Mr. Dent, the U.S. had high inflation and unemployment in the 1970s because that’s when so many baby boomers started looking for work and spending money to start new families.

As we advanced in our careers, we created the boom that began in 1982. The entrepreneurs among us launched the innovative companies that have reshaped the world and its economies.

Dent goes into a lot more detail about what’s causing this. He essentially says that we’ve just gone through a boom and bust in stocks and real estate — nobody can dispute that. He says the commodities boom will bust soon. That remains to be seen.

He also talks a lot about other cycles that, frankly, I am not at all sure exist.

Yet I know that the demographic, lifestyle cycle does exist.

If you wish, you can argue with Dent. He’s certainly been wrong about a lot of details. We certainly didn’t see the tremendous stock market bubble he predicted for the past few years.

I’m sure that many of his specific predictions about the next ten to thirteen years (demographics will come to our rescue about 2023) will be wrong.

But I do believe that anybody who discounts the adverse effect the aging of us baby boomers is going to have on the U.S. and world’s economy is foolish.

Just look at Japan. Their baby boomer generation started retiring in 1990. Japan’s economy hasn’t recovered yet.

Much of this book is fascinating speculation about the world’s future. (Hint: China will grow old before it grows rich. The most likely long-term contender to dominate Asia is India.)

Maureen Miller asked:

I know this might sound silly coming from someone who skirts the perimeter of the self-help industry. However, it supports the way I coach, so accurately, I have no other choice than to proclaim “There’s no such thing as the Self-Help Industry”.

There are consultants that seep into the self-help industry. Being a business coach as well as a consultant can be an attractive offer. It might seem like one heck of a deal to get two rolled up in one. And this story is not about maligning the business consulting industry. When it comes to getting business advice they are the greatest.

Consider this. You have a business in trouble and you call up a consultant/coach to help you out. Here is where the difference lies. A consultant listens to, and reviews all aspects of your business and offers advice, suggestions and changes to your business. If that is what you want then a consultant is for you. My job as a coach is totally different.

To say that business is just business is the biggest contradiction I’ve ever run in to. A business is ALL about relationships. What kind of relationship do you have with your colleagues, staff or employees? How good of a leader are you, even if you are the bottom of the staffing hierarchy? Every business needs and should have every person involved, thinking and acting like a leader.

What kind of relationship do you have with vendors, suppliers, customers? If you don’t want to even think about it, this is an area for coaching. How about all the fires you are putting out? Want to get to a place where you are responding to events in your business and not reacting?

What kind of personal relationships do you have outside your business? To say that these are unimportant is misleading. They are VERY important. Show me a person who says my work stays at work and my personal life is for home….well sorry I don’t believe them. I doubt very much the mind shuts off automatically when you walk into the office building. And I am willing to bet the minute you walk through the front door of your home your mind does not totally shut out work. When you have problems at work they place stress on personal relationships. When you have problems at home, unless you are a computer with a solid filing system, they walk through the front door of your office. It’s normal.

Coaching deals with handling the issues that in some way affect your business. Get to a place where you respond and not react to things in your business as well as your personal life. To believe that your business acts in isolation to the rest of your life is just not helpful or even true.

Do I know much about business? Well actually I do but I don’t give advice. My assumption is that you already know the solutions to what is vexing you. You already surrounded your business with people you admire and trust to show you how to run your business. If not, then you might want to reconsider the lack of business support. I would prefer you come up with THAT solution on your own and almost always my clients do.

“Hey! I should call up that consultant and get some help with my business plan!”

And my response would be, “Yes that is a great idea!”

If you run into a consultant who will give you business advice as well as coaching then that IS a good deal but they aren’t going to be cheap. If they are cheap then I would be suspicious.

What has this got to do with the self-help industry, not existing? Well all those books that tell you now to do things the “right” way…well there IS no right way. Exploring consulting vs. coaching was just a way to show the difference. There is only your way. I will never write a book on self-help. I don’t believe any one book is going to offer you the solution that is going to inspire, motivate and MAINTAIN the excitement that comes with “flow”.

I believe that I am a thought provoker and nothing more. You are the expert in your life and my job is to support you and ask the right questions. I know when I’ve followed my intuition and asked the right question, all sorts of lights start to come on. My clients walk away inspired, motivated and excited to try out what THEY figured out all on their own. I offer support as delayed feedback because my goal is to not have my clients accountable to me. My goal is to keep that fire burning that started with the spark of inspiration.

So is there a self-help industry? Well there are a lot of people out there that believe there is and make a million dollar business out of it. But I like to think that everyone I run into is an expert in their own lives. I’m just the catalyst.

Kris asked:

I’ve been in Iraq for well over a year and while I have been pretty much out of harm’s way for the most part, it has been a rough year emotionally. I have not been diagnosed with depression before because I never saw a psychiatrist or anyone of that nature, however, I can tell you that for a good part of ten years, I’ve been having a series of depression which last for several days.

Here in Iraq, it’s been the most prominent. I would get depressed and feel empty inside and this will last for a week and then I would feel better for a week and get depressed for another week and feel better for three weeks. Usually, my depression is sudden. I would be at work and I will feel fine and then all of a sudden I would feel this uncontrollable saddness and empty feeling inside me. Almost like disappointment or like I lost something. Which would eventually turn into iritability and hostility and back to silence again.

I want to see a real psyciatrist but don’t know what to do. Thanks.

Den Braun asked:

Both modern world and its financial system are rather diverse. No wonder so many people are in debt nowadays; they experience hard troubles paying the bills and get notices from creditors. It’s clear enough that when you are likely to lose your or your car, you will hardly be able to sleep and even work well. Despite common opinion being in debt does not necessary mean that a person is a loafer and that is the only reason for his getting into bad financial situation. Some debt is actually good. Borrowing money to purchase a home, or to complete your education, is generally considered “good” debt.

When you found yourself in debt there can be numerous options for you: realistic budgeting, credit counseling from a reputable organization, debt negotiation, debt consolidation, or bankruptcy. The level of your debt as well as your discipline and prospects for the future will determine the option which is the best for you.

Those who have realistic assessment of what they earn and spend and who plan their finances – they do take control of the situation. The self-help should start with listing all sources of income. Once you know your fixed expenses you may easily define how much money you may spend and not to occur in debt. Then you should count non-fixed expenses (those that are different each). One can make a mistake when not taking into account such expenses that seem to be insignificant. If you bring them together and you will be surprised by this essential sum of money. By prioritizing your commitments you can make sure your basic needs are met and then you can decide what else you can afford, and what you may have to save for or do without. Thus, when you know what you earn and spend monthly you may come to conclusion – to earn more or to spend less. It’s quite easy to say “to spend less” but not so easy to turn it into reality. At least you can shop around for goods and services that are cheaper.

It goes without saying that budgeting takes time and mathematical skills. Surely, it won’t be the best leisure of yours. But if you budget is not eternity, you will have to choose: to work out budget or to get into debts. A personal budget can help you to plan ahead and make the most of your money. You also will need to review your budget regularly, because your circumstances are likely to change.

The information about budgeting and money management techniques can be fount at local public library and bookstores. Moreover, computer software programs can be useful tools for developing and maintaining a budget, balancing your checkbook, and creating plans to save money and pay down your debt.

When it comes to controlling debt, or getting out of debt, there is no remedy for all the financial cases. There is, however, one definite thing that you won’t avoid when it comes to controlling debt and getting out of debt – working your personal

Aurelia Williams asked:

Statistics on teenagers suffering from depression and other mental ailments are alarming. Various studies suggest that 1 in 4 teens suffer from some sort of mental illness. Teenage mental illness, to include depression, can have dire consequences. Teenage ******* is on the rise. It is the third leading cause of death in the age bracket of 15 to 24 years. Dealing with depression in teens is an important step in reducing these numbers in our society.

Many things can lead to depression. A teenager is just learning how to handle the pressures and emotions of an adult. Only 30% of teens suffering seek help. The others just suffer through and do their best to get through. Adults have difficulty dealing with many things, asking a teenager to deal with it on their own, is not be the best option.

Learning the signs of depression for our youth can be difficult. Depressed teenagers are often just seen as being a teen. Signs of irritability, fatigue, withdrawal and changes of eating and sleeping habits, are seen as normal signs of growing up and hormone surges. They are also signs of depression. Learning the difference in your teen’s behavior may be key in getting them the help that they need.

Learning to talk to your teen may be your best investment in their mental health. Parents and adults in a teen’s life struggle with this aspect. They often want to see the teen as still a child where the teen wants to be seen as an adult. Learning to bridge this gap and communicate efficiently may be a daunting task, but can be managed.

An adult should learn to offer support when conversing with a teenager. Let them know you are there for them. Ensure them that you are available to them at any time. Show them that you can listen without being judgmental. Don’t try to talk them out of the way that they feel. Show them that you can understand and give them the help that they need to deal with how they are feeling.

Trust your own instincts. If you have a teenager that is showing signs of depression get them help. Trusting your own feelings and emotions may be what sets the teen on the road to better mental health. They may resist getting help at first. Be firm. Let them know you are there for them and willing to work with them, but insist that they find someone they can work with to help them through this difficult time in their life.

Often a teen will find it easier to speak with someone other than a parent. Consider a peer mentor for your teen. These are teens that are trained to work with others. They become a positive influence. Teen mentors can become a confidant and will be there for the teen that may be in trouble otherwise.

Teenage depression is a serious problem, but can be treated. Learn to recognize the symptoms and get help as soon as possible. Turn the teen in your life into a success story instead of a statistic.
