Qυеѕtіοn bу curious_cat: Whаt аrе thе chances thаt chronic depression leads tο schizoprenia?
Someone close tο mе hаѕ bееn battling depression fοr 17 years now. Shе іѕ doing a ехсеllеnt job, hаѕ held οn tο a demanding job fοr 4 years now. Though hеr performance аt work аrе highly erratic. Periods οf poor apathetic performance interspersed wіth periods οf high performance.

Shе shows sympotm οf chronic depression, withdraws frοm social life, hаѕ low energy, саn spend days іn bed, іѕ messy etc.Shе’s οn medication tοο.

I drеаd thаt thе next phase wіll bе schizoprenia. Shе’s 32 now аnd hаѕ bееn suffering frοm depression ѕіnсе ѕhе wаѕ 15.
Though I ѕаіd hеr performance аt work іѕ erratic, i dont rесkοn іt іѕ suggestive οf bipolar. Shе hаѕ bееn fired once before fοr apathy аt work. Sіnсе thеn ѕhе іѕ frightened tο lose hеr job. Whеn hеr poor performance аt work gets noticable аnd ѕhе thinks hеr job іѕ іn danger,ѕhе bucks up аnd works harder.

And ѕhе саnnοt sorry tο ѕау retire frοm work. Shе lives іn a country thаt dosen’t give benefits. And hеr aged parents саnnοt take care οf hеr. Shе hаѕ tο earn hеr living. Shе wουld very much lіkе tο reyire οr atlease work раrt time, bυt іѕ powerless tο dο ѕο.

Zero. Zilch. Nothing. Nada. Will NOT happen. Depression is apples. Schizophrenia is oranges and apples do not lead to oranges. Got it?
    God Bless.

Why do you dread she will develop schizophrenia? Depression doesn’t cause schizophrenia.

Depression can be part of schizophrenia, sometimes after a psychotic episode, public who suffer from schizophrenia can become depressed over both a loss of symptoms and the hard reality of their disease.

Of course, most public who suffer from depression, even chronic bouts of depression are not suffering from schizophrenia.

It sounds like her depression is broken up or reoccurant, so that just means that it comes and goes. Her performance at work makes sense given that.

If she is experiencing highs or feelings of better than her usual self (when she’s not depressed that is) than she may have something called bipolar disorder. Public who have bipolar disorder have reoccuring depression as well as periods of mania or hypomania. Hypomania would be highs that are better than usual, but don’t interfere with her job or social life, in fact, a hypomanic person is fantastic on the job.

Anyways, your friend should just discuss these things with her doctor and if she’s still getting depressed despite the medication, that should be discussed too, but from what you said, there is absolutely no reason to worry that she will develop schizophrenia.

Depression and schizophrenia are generally not related. She may have a bipolar disorder and a excellent psychiatrist can evaluate her and made a diagnosis. The fact that she swings back is a excellent sign even if if she swings too far then it can be tragic. Modern day medication can often help a situation like hers.

The symptoms of “Though her performance at work are highly erratic. Periods of poor apathetic performance interspersed with periods of high performance.” suggest that she is bipolar.

Depressives don’t go on to schizophrenia. They go on to suicide.

The danger with medicines is that they give you the energy to do what you need to do. And anyone that says “suicide is a permanent key to a temporary problem” has never battled depression for 17 years. They just don’t know.

She probably needs help with affairs of daily living; if you are battling depression, you can’t keep the house clean, and if you live in a pig sty, it’s even harder to battle depression. If you could come in, straighten things up, do some laundry, cook a few meals, it would really do a long way towards making her life tolerable. Don’t just jump in and take over, though; she’s already suffering feelings of impotence, and if she feels like you’re treating her like an unacceptable, that will make things worst, so *talk* to her, and question *permission* to help with those things. (She will feel undeserving, so feel free to plead with her, to be allowed to treat a deserving friend like the friend she is.)

It may be necessary for her to retire on disability. Social Security disability is getting harder and harder to get, but she probably qualifies, if the doctors fill out the forms correctly.

And never underestimate the regard of hugs. She’s been through hell, and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight.

i have schizophrenia.depression and schizophrenia are two different things.schizophrenia is when someone see things or public who aren’t there.i could see someone one pass bye and u wouldn’t be able to see it.it’s hard to give reasons for.

no it cannot develop into schizophrenia thats not possible. it doesnt work like that. plus shes around or past the age that it ordinarily occurs in women – that being later than it develops in men.
